I read on LEM that you have to partition your hard drive, and that OS X
has to be in the first 8GB of the drive. Now I wanted to ask is does the
first partition have to be 8GB or can it be anything smaller than that?

Hi Derek,

It can be smaller, although it does have to be large enough for OS X. Anyware in the 2-8 gig's should be OK. If you want to boot OS 9 off a seperate partition it will also need it's partition to be inside the first 8 gigs of the drive.

The first time I installed X it was as follows:
1.5 gig for classic
5.5 gig for OS X
3 gig for third partition

This time I boot X and OS 9 off the same drive and have had no problems, however the general reccomendation is to have one OS on a partition.

Also be aware that if you use OS X's installer utility to change any existing partitions on a drive then all data on the drive is lost. I found this out the hard way when deleting the 1.5 and 5.5 gig partions and making one nice 7 gig partition. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth....:)

So if you can backup your data to another drive or computer then do so. I now have an external hard drive just for backups.
