Does anyone know of any other decent programs for
OS X (either freeware or minimally expensive shareware) that are good for
audio recording?
Rather than bombard you with a VERY long list, I'll just mention a few I use and point you to Versiontracker.com or Macupdate.com (and macaudio.com) where you can get your own copies to try out.
Since you mention Pro Tools, I assume you have some interest in multi-track recording, so I'll start with those:
1. SparxLE 2. Amadeus II 3. Bias DeckLE (or PeakLE, I get confused since I rarely ever use them) 4. Jasmine
For simple two-track, try these: 1. Sound Studio 2. Audio In 3. AudioX 4. recorder.xhead 5. Audacity 6. Cacophony
Many, many more where those came from.
