Hi! I've been reading the imac list archives for several months now off and on. I've already found a lot of useful info in the archive. I only hope I can offer someone some useful advice someday.
Our rev a is actually down now. What happened: one day the imac just shut itself down while I was working on it. I couldn't get it to power back up. After unplugging it, and plugging it back in, I could get it to chime, amber light, and briefly flash green light, then shut down again. But after a few repeat performances, this also ceased. We opened it up, pressed the cuda button. Nada. We replaced the PRAM, nothing. We tried pressing the cuda button again, and we saw a little puff of smoke rise up from underneath the CUDA button. Uh Oh! Okay, so we know something is very not happy. I am thinking, from reading old posts, that my "flyback transformer" is wonky. Other tests my husband did convinced him that it's not the video or the power supply. I am much more comfortable dealing with software type problems, and system folder problems. My husband takes them apart, adds ram, puts in cards etc. (BTW He didn't seem very upset by the puff of smoke. He said "Oh, I don't see anything scorched in there..." ) So anyways, I know a lot less about the actual hardware components than maybe I should. What hardware do I actually need to replace if it is the flyback transformer? If I replace the whole mobo will that work?
