I have a snow 500-mHz slot-loading iMac from summer 2001 with an incredibly whiny hard drive which I have finally gotten up the nerve to replace myself (twice replacing memory chips being my only prior experience inside a computer).
I just did EXACTLY this on a very similar model, for EXACTLY the same reasons. Went without a hitch.
But the Maxtor box says "Drives larger than 137GB require Mac-compatible ATA/133 PCI card (not included, [of course])."
Even if they HAD included it, wouldn't have done you any good. That iMac doesn't have any place for such a card, and wouldn't work with it if it did. You are limited to 137GB max with an INTERNAL drive (and after Mac OS overhead, you're probably back to 128GB in real space terms).
A couple of other things I've seen in my research seem to indicate that getting over 137 GB makes a big difference for some reason. What's the reason?
The hard drive controller in the iMac can't "see" more than 137GB.
Secondly, is putting the new drive in a Firewire enclosure (temporarily to transfer), then removing it and putting it in the iMac, a safe way to transfer my data? Enclosures cost more than I would have guessed, but maybe it's worth it.
That's exactly what I did:
1. Remove old hard drive, put in FW enclosure
2. Put new hard drive in iMac
3. Boot from old hard drive, format/partition new hard drive
4. Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone old to new
5. Set new HD as startup device
6. Once booted, Repair Permissions and/or run Cocktail or Onyx to clear out cruft.
Dealmac.com has some great deals on FW enclosures. I used one I found on my own for $35 (It's now $45, but it even has USB2 as well!): http://store.yahoo.com/akidacomputer/35exencomfir2.html

"Working on a PC feels like going to work in a starched shirt and tie. Walking up to a PC makes me anxious, almost like getting ready to take the stage to deliver a speech on a topic I don't quite fully grasp. You know what it is you need to do, but success in doing it is not certain. Working on a Mac feels like throwing on your favorite jeans, a pair of sandals, and a soft, well-worn t-shirt. Instead of sitting down at a PC, you climb into the Mac environment like a huge beanbag chair, squish around a few moments until you get your butt in that perfect position, and then let it all fill up around you." -- John Manzione, MacNetv2, 13-June-03
