I had a sudden thought when reading a replay. Do you mean a NetMD player? If so then AFAIK there is no support for the USB high speed transfer, as it uses ATRAC3 which is exclusively used by Apple. IMHO I think it stinks that Sony don't support the MAc, but then they are competing on the asme terms as the iPod, although then again they could make headway against it if they offered Mac support (not that I want them to, although MD is a nice lower cost alternative). IMHO the MD is struggling against the tide of MP3 players, which are getting cheaper and better, and also bigger.
I have an ancient (well, summer 2000) MD rig that consists of a deck and a portable player. It does the job and does it digitally (thanks to a USB to optical TOSLink device - Xitel MDPort DG-2) which produces almost perfect reproduction, esp if you encode using 160 or 192kbps AAC (MPEG-4) audio in iTunes 4.
