I'm using my iMac (Early 2001 G3 500 MHz) for pretty simple, non-professional stuff, so I've stuck to free/included software (OS 10.1.5)
and 128 MB RAM...until this week. Staples brought cheap PC133 DIMMS to within a couple miles of my home. Although marketed for the "other" world,
I couldn't resist quadrupling my memory for $40!

It did concern me that Apple listed more parameters than K-Byte offered on their packaging.

But I could see the absence of buffer chips, and surmised that "standard" PC133 was 3.3-V, after a little last-minute web surfing. I figured that firmware would balk if anything else was wrong, or there would otherwise be an obvious performance problem.

So, I've had 512 MB in for almost a week. It all registers, and nothing's burning. I can download entire web pages! :) Although I imagined it smelled a little hotter back there at first, I now think it isn't unusual.
I wasn't in the habit of sniffing the top vent before, but I remember it did have an odor, and I think the new odor has subsided to a comparable level.

What do you think? Was it absolutely foolish of me to toy with unsanctioned components? Is it only a matter of time before I crash and burn? Or are any other cheapos joining me? (Rebates must be postmarked today.)
