Before I make X my main OS, I want to understand a few things first. Right
now 9.2.2 is on my iMac's internal HD. Both 9.2.2 and X also have their own
partition on my external HD.

My plans are to replace 9.2.2 with X on my iMac, and then reinstall the
various drivers, such as for the laser and inkjet printers, etc. I'd like
to switch from using PageMaker 5 to InDesign 2 at the same time. However,
things never go as planned, yet deadlines still have to be met. So if for
some reason the printer doesn't work or I can't get PageMaker 5 to run in
Classic or something like that, shouldn't I be able to run 9.2.2 from the
external HD and conduct business as usual? I might need another month (at
least!!) on PageMaker before I can navigate InDesign well enough to complete
my monthly project. If I didn't have to reinstall PageMaker, but instead
could just run it from 9.2.2 on the external, where it's already backed up,
that would make life much simpler.

I have not had any trouble running OS X (Jag) that is ONLY loaded on an
external partition, except that I can't seem to update it (I'm on dial-up).
So it seems like I should be able to flip-flop the situation and run 9.2.2
that would be only loaded on an external partition. However, I also know
that some things that work for one OS, don't work for the other, and
vice-versa. Does anyone foresee any problems with running PageMaker, or any
other of my apps, from 9.2.2 on the external HD? Obviously, I don't know
the difference between opening a program on Classic while in OS X, and
restarting with 9.2.2 as the startup disk in order to open a program there.
I want to understand this a little better before I make this big leap.

One other question not as important: Can you combine two partitions and
turn them into one without reformatting the whole HD? My external HD is
divided into six partitions. I'd like to combine two of them into a bigger
partition so iMovie will have more room. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Claire
