iPhoto crashing when trashing

When me or my wife delete lots (80+?) of pictures from our iPhoto 
libraries, iPhoto will periodically close. When you rerun, the pictures 
you deleted are back, which means you have to go through everything 
again. We've started exiting periodically, and I just discovered you 
can right-click on the trash-can and empty the trash. Does anyone know 
of a fix?

iPhoto is 2.0, Mac OS X 10.2.6, 17" iMac, ~1000 photos in my library, 
~500 in my wife's.
