I had a friend order a new iMac from smalldog.com. She got it and asked me to come set it up since she and her husband claim to have no abilities in that line. I set it up and it's nice, BUT, altho she told the smalldog person she was going to use it mainly for Photoshop, they sold it with only 256MB RAM.

Yeh that's a stock fitting for an iMac 15". It'll be ok with 256MB RAM. I never used mine with that little as I had a 512MB SODIMM waiting for it before it got here. I have used OS X on machines with 256MB RAM and it's not so bad. On a G4 you have the added advantage that using Altivec acceleration in Photoshop makes it fast on anything with all but the smallest RAM setup. I got a 512MB for mine and upped it to 768MB and it's smmmooottthhh.

I thought they'd insist on at least 512. We tried to phone smalldog, but they were too busy to answer. She also bought a photo quality printer and v.g. scanner from them.

As a UK'er I've no experience of SmallDog, but I've always regarded them as good people as I've not heard anything from the contrary.

One, can she limp along in 10.2.7 with 256 if she runs only Photoshop when editing her photos?

As long as we aren't talking 6MP photos, yeh she should be OK. I think the main thing is she won't be able to run a lot of apps at the same time, certainly not iPhoto and Photoshop as both take up a lot of RAM.

If it turns out she needs the extra 256 (or more), is installation in the flatpanel simple enough that I--who have only rarely installed RAM in other Macs--can do it?

No sweat. Here's how:

Before we start please note I will not be held responsible for any damage that occurs from following these instructions, they are used at the owners risk. You should always read, understand and follow any instructions supplied with you power tools, AAHMEM I mean computer.

1. Find a flat, soft surface. I used my bed, but you can always spread a towel out on a table or something.
MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR WORKING ENVIRONMENT ARE FREE FROM STATIC ELECTRICITY.
2. Lay the iMac down so the screen is flat on the table and the base is sitting with the bottom square to the surface.
3. Take a small Phillips (cross head) screw driver and undo the 4 screws in the silver base. They are captive screws so they won't come out, they stay with the metal plate.
4. Grab the base by two of the captive screws and gently pull it away from the iMac.
5. There you will see two slots, one is the Airport slot, the other for the RAM. If you have the CD door/Apple facing straight down and the ports straight up, the RAM is the slot to the Right.
6. Insert the RAM into the plastic holder. You will need to put it in contacts end first, tipped about 30 degrees up from the plane of the iMac's board, then hinge it by that end and clip it down into the frame.
7. Tidy up in the bay and make sure the Airport antenna hasn't come unstuck as it may foul the base.
8. Replace the base panel. Perhaps the hardest bit of the whole thing is finding the screw holes for the captive screws.
9. Screw it back together and stand it upright on your desk.
10. Plug it in and see if it works :)
