Virex is the culprit.
Hmm, well, that makes sense. So, Virex is set to open at startup and you must have had it set to go online to check for new virus definitions at launch. This was why you did not have to connect via Internet Connect, Virex had already done so.
I have tried re-entering my account and server information in the Virex preferences but the information isn't sticking. The next time I power up it's gone again.
I don't use Virex, so can't be sure about this, but I would suggest looking in your Preferences folder for a Virex pref file. Trash that, Virex will create a new one which might solve your problem.
