I'm running Cleardock in Panther with no problems, though IIRC I had
to update the APE Manager thingy first.

I tried but it asked for a password and I don't remember having to use a password before.

I didn't run into this, so I'm not sure what the problem could be. You might try downloading and uninstalling/reinstalling, since I'm pretty sure Cleardock is a free program.

Chas, it was the APE thingy that asked for a password/serial #.

Even made very small and with auto hide turned on, the Dock STILL
gets in my way (unless I leave about an inch of empty space between
the window edge and the screen edge where the Dock is located.

For some people this could be a valid point. If you have a small screen, the Dock could be seen as more "obtrusive" than Fruitmenu. I'll certainly concede that point. Personally, I like having my most-used stuff readily accessible and QUICKLY customisable (which the Apple Menu and Fruitmenu can't match). Particularly since I found MultiDockX (which allows me to have several custom-oriented Docks), I'm really enjoying the Dock even more these days.

I've found that having the hierarchical lists for
System Preferences and Applications in the Apple menu is more
convenient having to open a window to select one.

Well, that's no longer true in Panther actually (the System Preferences panel now shows a list of the individual panels), and it was never true for Applications. I just click-and-hold on the Apps folder in the dock and I get a list of the apps. I navigate to the one I want and it opens. Simple.
 And no, your "click
and hold" does NOT give a list for the System Preferences, it gives
ONE item "Show in Finder" FruitMenu gave a nice list of the control
panels.

This has been changed in Panther. Until that happened, I used a menubar item called "PrefsMenu" to do the same thing as what you're talking about.

Again, in the version of Panther That is installed on my iMac, when I click on the Apple Menu, the System Preferences choice does not have a sub-menu listing the the control panels; you have to click on the System Preferences choice to open the System Preferences. Regarding the SP icon in the dock, clicking and holding only brings up one choice "Show in Finder" and selecting that just opens the Application Folder with System Preferences highlighted. So how did you get the Systems Preference item under the Apple menu to show a sub-menu? The only way I can get the list is to open the System Preferences and then click on View

Xounds lets the OS X Macintosh really be the "Computer for
the rest of us"

My understanding of Xounds is that it simply allows you to assign sounds to system actions. Is there something else it does that makes it so wonderous to merit such praise? Sounds take up a LOT of RAM and on low-mem computers can REALLY affect peformance, which is why Apple limited it's sounds to only the necessary ones.

Which is a typical MICROSOFT action; Apple used to be about the user not the computer being the main thing. Panther's remake of the Finder was even touted in those terms. As for memory usage, that is each users choice. Neither Steve, nor anyone else should tell me how to use MY computer. If that is the way Apple is going, then maybe we should go to Steve's ORIGINAL Macintosh design: mouse only, no keyboard!

A lot of the changes in OS X
seem to be change JUST FOR THE SAKE OF CHANGE.

No offense, but this is the standard line from people who've never really learned the system. I think as you grow more familiar with OS X you'll discover that NONE of the changes made were for that reason.

Again, you are inferring that I am stupid or lazy because I don't want to set up MY computer just like yours or Jobs.
