Conventional Startup:
- Normal Mac Chime
- Grey Apple Logo Screen
- Brief display of Blue Screen with Mac OSX Logo in White Rectangular Box and Menus at top
- Endless Blue Screen with Spinning-Beachball-of-Death
- CD Drive inaccessable (must manually load/eject, no screen response)
Single-User Startup (via Command-S):
- Full Display Text Screen
- Root Prompt
- /sbin/fsck -y repairs incorrect block counts, etc.
- 4 overlapping extent file ids remain even after multiple runs of fsck
- mount -uw /
- mv'd (renamed) 'Desktop DB', 'Destop DF' files to 'OLD Desktop ...' - no help, mv'd back
- 'Cleanup at Startup' folder empty
- Emptied Trash via rm -i (Airport Installation script, 'Rescued Items from ...' folder (4 'gvhx temp000x' files))
- shutdown -h now
Any ideas on what he should do next? Since it is still under warranty and it was APPLE software (Software Update and Mac OS 10.2.8 Update) that caused the problem, I keep telling him to take it to an Apple repair shop.
