I think he meant use the iPod as a bootable Firewire drive for a Mac :D
When the iPod first came out some people put OS X on it. Some of them overheated and died. As I recall, Apple didn't fix them because they said that wasn't the intended purpose. Certainly they aren't designed to dissipate much heat. Given the price of a dedicated Firewire drive vs. the iPod, I'd shy away from an application that runs them too hard....
I'd agree. I picked up a pocket iPod sized Firewire enclosure from the Paris Expo for 70 (US$115) with FireWire and USB 2.0 ports. I expect it is a similar price, if not less, in the US. A drive to put inside would probably cost another $80-100 and be of more than sufficient size to boot OS X.
To give you some idea of what an iPod can take, it's designed to access the hard disk once every 2-6 mins on average (depends how long your MP3s are) to load each song to RAM, and it only does that if you have it on random play. If you play a list in order it loads as much into RAM as it can (usually about 20 mins) then caches as it goes along, thus increasing battery life. I;m not sure the HD doesn't even spin down during idle time.
In total contrast loading OS X typically takes 1-2 mins, maybe 3 on an older G3, during which time the hard disk booting the OS is running constantly and seeking like a blue-arsed fly (if you'll excuse the expression!!). This generates a ton of heat and hammers the drive a lot. This is *yet* another reason why turning your computer on and off all the time is bad for it. For an iPod, doing this regularly will most likely kill it as the hard disk is not open to moving air.
