I have an old war-horse that is my DeskWriter C attached to my 840av on the other side of the room. I can communicate to it via AppleTalk over Ethernet (LocalTalk Bridge Extension - gotta love that trick).
Is there a way of allowing my Panther machines to print to this printer? Neither have serial so they would need to talk to it by AppleTalk (not IP!). Long Shot I know but I was just speculating... -- Mark Benson
Mark, head on over to SourceForge at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/ and check out Gimp-Print, CUPS, and GhostScript. If your printer is supported, you're in business. Long story short is that these folks have written some pretty cool code that lets OSX speak to a bunch of legacy printers. It's kept my Epson Photo 700 in the game. If your printer's on Ethernet, the other machines should be able to see it. You can make AppleTalk active on TCP/IP if you need to.
