Hi all,
I have an old tray loading 266 imac with the standard USB 1.1 ports on it.
I am looking to get a CD-R/DVD unit for it but was wondering if:
a) Internal or External would be best
b) If internal any idea of where to get it upgraded as I dont fancy taking
it to bits myself
c) if external will a standard external USB CD case work with a normal
cd-r/dvd unit in it. (http://

The tray-loaders won't play DVD's. It's just a laptop drive, you could replace it with a Matshita UJDA310 and have native (Finder, iTunes) burning. Plus it's more likely your faceplate will work. Or later, faster drives can be used with an easily modified support file.
External USB is limited to I believe 4x speeds.
