I apologize for the length of this message, but it is mostly informational.

My iMac Graphite DVD SE has been running OS X without a hitch for several years. I
recently decided to rebuild it to have the entire drive for OS X. When I attempted to
boot Install CD 1, I got I a garish pink-orange screen with a Default
Catch error 300 (sometimes 900 as below), Open Firmware error screen. If I type
"mac-boot", I go back into Classic. After fiddling with it for several days, now I am
getting the standard screen with the gray Apple logo for about a minute, and then two
bands of gibberish splashed across mid-screen. I then have to power off.

The basic profile of the iMac is:

iMac Graphite SE 400 Mhz; Original 128 Mb RAM + 256 Mb 3rd party added; 13 gb drive
Firmware is 4.1.9f. I don't know if that is most current, but it was what I used
initially in Sept 2001 to start with 10.2.

I have zeroed out the drive and set up 9.0 (not updated) with an HFS Plus partition.
If I try to start the OS X Installer, I get the Restart screen as expected, but either
the band of garbage or the Open Firmware screen appears. Here is the info from that
screen:

Default Catch! Code=900 at %SRR0:00000000 %SRR1:00083030
Apple PowerMac2 4.1.9f1
Boot ROM built on 9-14-01 at 13:18:04
Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
Welcome to Open Firmware. The system time and date is 20:18:25 12/13/2003
To Continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press Return
To shut down, type"shut-down " and press Return.
OK

I have done a Reset-all along with rebuilding NVRAM as well as PRAM. I removed all
peripherals and removed third-party RAM and even put the original keyboard and mouse
back as the only USB devices.

Any ideas? I have found mention that hardware is the most often seen cause, but I
don't know from the errors where to start looking.
