I try to connect to an ftp server, it asks for username and password, I enter it, it likes it, no problem.
So why can I only read from it?!
I do websites for friends so this is quite annoying... Any ideas?

Usually an FTP server is configured to allow uploads only to certain locations for each user. You need to ask the admin of the site what the policy is, and possibly to adjust it to allow you to upload stuff for your friends.

Lots of FTP sites allow no uploads by default at all.
