Hi,

Use AppleWorks at your peril. There is a reason why it comes free on new Macs while other desktop publishing applications cost hundreds of dollars.

Now hang on a minute ...

not looking for a fight here, but don't you think you're being a TEENSY bit unfair in expecting a $79 program like Appleworks to substitute for a $800-900 program like Quark or InDesign (which you refer to in a later message)?

AppleWorks is not marketed as, nor intended to be, nor even tries to pretend that it's anything near that level. It's meant to be used PRIMARILY as a basic word processor and spreadsheet or database, nicely integrated and with a FEW dtp tricks up its sleeve to help make things look a bit nicer. It screams "basic" with every mouseclick, and for many people that's all they need. Indeed, I find the WP and Spreadsheet aspects of AW surprisingly robust (even able to read and write MS Word and Excel docs!) for what they are.

Comparing AW to Quark Xpress or InDesign is like comparing a Hyundai to a Humvee. And by contrast, using something like InDesign to do your word processing is like buying an $800 cigarette lighter. They are two different tools for two completely different levels of work.
