Had two Maxtors die with the double beep of death and fail the SMART test......been running two 80GB WD drives with no problems....it seems like HD's die when they want or not......

Yes, that's been my experience too. You only sometimes get a "warning" that the HD is going to die (though the SMART monitoring of tools like DW3 helps with that).
That's why it's important to make backups. This lesson cannot be repeated too often. For a relatively small amount of money, you can buy an external FW hard drive and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner (or some alternative program) and make safe, bootable backups as often as you like with an absolute minimum of effort.
If you're working with data you can't afford to lose (digital pictures, etc) I recommend it highly.
