Walter:
Have you tried replacing the battery on the logic board? It will surely
give out after a few months if you unplug your iMac [or switch off the
power strip] when the computer is not in use, or in a few years if you
leave the computer plugged into a live socket. When the battery fails, all
sorts of strange things can occur, some of them similar to what you
reported, including the apparent "self-repair" after 20 minutes.
Hi Melvyn,
thanks for the advice. I would suspect the battery too, if it wasn't for the very strong smell of burnt stuff I got last time I tried to start it up and the hiss and crackle! In fact, when I first experienced the 20 minutes 'self-repair' thing, I thought it was the PRAM battery that was at fault. I have since learnt that the 20 minutes 'self-repair' thing is a classic symptom of the flyback transformer on the analog board being about to kick the bucket.
After further phone calls to my local Apple Centre, they have acknowledge they were mistaken in not advising me to take it in when it was still under warranty. Apparently, they are waiting to get the replacement parts from Apple. With luck, the computer should be fixed pretty soon and under the terms of the warranty. I'll believe it when I see it, of course. In the meantime, thanks to all of you who advised me to raise a stink with them.
I'll report back once in the clear.
Regards,
Walter
