Running OS X v.10.3 and Mail 1.3 on my 800 Mhz Flatpanel iMac I get a warning/request to enter my Password. When I click Cancel the window closes and everything runs fine. Conclusion, it does not need my password. It is irritating to get this 2/3 times a day. How can i avoid this happening.
I don't have an answer for you on how to make it stop happening, but I can at least tell you what's going on.
I see that message sometimes as well -- it happens whenever the Mail program doesn't get the answer back from your ISP that it was expecting when it tries to log on using your default name and password.
If you click "cancel" it will try again later (which I find generally works).
I don't know what this seems to happen (maybe the Mail program has a bug, or maybe your ISP's mail server is sometimes too slow to respond and it times out), but the only "fix" I can offer is either repair the keychain and see if that helps, or to change ISPs. I have two email accounts, one with Earthlink and one with .Mac -- ironically, the one with Earthlink NEVER re-asks me for my password, while the one from .Mac does so about once a week!
