Hi Dennis, I don't think you got an answer to your problem yet. I have seen the same problem with Netscape Communicator and it's derivatives like Mozilla. As we don't have AOL in Denmark, I cannot tell you if it is the same problem.
I don't think that it is a question of permissions in this case, but more that there is more than one preference file that is attached to the application somehow. Bad programming of a third-party utility is hardly a problem that you can accuse Apple for. Perhaps there is an AOL Communicator folder or something like it in either the Documents folder or the Library/Application Support-folder that has the problem.
