In AppleWorks, you have the option to save a word processing document as a Word document. You have the option to save a spreadsheet document as an Excel document. After you open a document, go to File > Save As > File Format. Pretty neat. You'd want to experiment with the receiving computers to make sure it would work for you.

If you want to save your document as a PDF, go to File > Print. There's a row of buttons along the bottom of that window, level with the Print option. One option is to Save as PDF. I love this! This is WONDERFUL if you create a newsletter on AppleWorks (draw document, for example) and want to send a copy via e-mail to everyone. Clip art holds its integrity, colors remain, etc. Out of a membership of 200 in our home school organization, with 90% opting to receive e-mail, only one replied that they couldn't open last month's 10-page PDF newsletter.
