Brian,

I agree completely with Jeff in recommending the 6Y120P0. I just installed one of them in my iMacDV, and it's FANTASTIC!!! It's so quiet, my iMac sounds like it's turned off. A lot of this is because of the 8MB cache, I think. I find that frequently while I'm web-surfing, the drive stays spun down, and only occasionally spins up.

You will need to move a jumper pin from the "cable select" (or CS) position to the "drive select" (or Master) position, but there's a sticker on the drive showing which pins the jumper should be on for that purpose.

Installation is a straightforward process, and took me only 10 minutes, having never done it before. You will appreciate the instructions and pictures on how to install the drive on this website:

Be sure to obtain a grounding strap or keep yourself well grounded somehow while you're doing this, because you will need to remove your RAM (and airport card, if installed) to swap hard drives.

You may find it convenient to get a cheap external firewire housing from somewhere, so that you can easily move the files from your old drive to the new one. If you don't need the old drive and housing afterwards, you can always recover the cost of the housing by selling them off on Ebay, or on the swap-list.

Also, if you haven't got a bunch of RAM in your iMac DV, this might be a good time to add some. If you're going to stick with OS 9, you might use this as an opportunity to give it a fresh install from original CDs, in case you've accumulated some noxious INITs, or have some corruptions in the odd system files. Finally, if you're thinking of trying out X, I highly recommend using OS X 10.3 "Panther" on these iMacs, because it really does run faster than Jaguar.

Have fun!

You should have no problems with drives 120GB or smaller. You can put in
a larger drive, but it won't recognize more than 137GB. If you don't need
the largest/fastest drive then I would just go to Office Max or Best Buy
or some such place and see what they have on sale.

If you do want a large/fast drive, I'd suggest something like the Maxtor
120GB 6Y120P0 ULTRA-ATA 133 7200RPM/8MBCACHE--under $100 at mwave.com.

Hope this helps,
