I used a Linksys wireless router with 3 or 4 hard wire ports built in. Wireless cards are whatever was on sale - several different brands.
My stuff is antique now. Today I think one would reach for an 802.11g rig. I am sure others will know more than I do. Better yet, I think I would go for an Airport. I have come to believe that the Apple hardware and software are top-notch. The up-front sting of the purchase price is repaid many times over in reduced frustration. This was just brought home to me yet again last night when I went to my mother-in-law's house to print some photos on her new 2.8 Gig supermega PC. We gave up in frustraton and I finally took the media card home to print from the Mac. Just my plug for the Mac - I have no experience to tell me if the Airport is as good as the rest of the MAC hardware.
