Does anyone know the maximum size hard drive a tray load iMac can take?

I think you will find that, regardless of the overall size of the internal hard drive, you HAVE to partition it so that there is a partition no larger than 8 Gigabytes at the front of the drive. That is if you intend to run OS X (and perhaps OS 9.2).

Secondly, I think you will find that these iMacs can only "see" a maximum of 128 Gigabytes or so. The exception is if you make the hard drive an EXTERNAL firewire drive, which you can do if your iMac has a firewire port or you add a Sonnet Harmoni upgrade kit to get one. One issue I encountered with the Sonnet firewire solution is that I can mount a larger external firewire drive but I cannot boot from it, whereas the same firewire drive attached to my wife's newer flat-panel iMac WILL boot from this external firewire drive.

If you have access to another Macintosh which CAN "see" all of a very large volume, you may be able to partition it down into volumes which can all be seen by your old iMac.

Actually, I am just assuming that your reference to "tray load iMac" means an older, like Bondi Blue, iMac but I just realized that my wife's flat panel iMac is also a tray loader. So maybe I am barking up the wrong tree.

Hope this helps.
