I recently talked a friend of mine to upgrade his iMacSE to MacOSX 10.3. He had plenty of RAM (>600Mb) and a good size hard (120Gb) drive so why not? Everything works fine and he is really happy. 10.3 seems to be faster than 9.2 that he used previously. However, two small glitches... in iTunes when turning on the Visual Effects the graphics are all ugly and crude looking and nothing like the smooth picture that I get on my new iMac. Secondly, in Finder, whenever he changes from one user to another the screen just blinks and quickly switches to the second user, i.e. there is no 'rotating cube' effect. Does anyone know why this is?

Mac OS X 10.3 makes a lot of use of Quartz Extreme technology as Jack said. I have the same with my G3/400 B&W. It runs panther perfectly, and I even like panther more on the G3 than on on my 17" iMac!

But the stock ATI Rage 128 Graphics card in the G3/400 is not Quartz Extreme compatible, and neither are the graphics cards in the original iMacs, Clamshell iBooks, and a few other models, so you don't get the cool effects. The iTunes effects are a bit jumpy, you don't get the spinning cube, and things like the genie effect when minimising and the finder window that zooms out of the icon are rather jumpy as well.

In the case of my G3/400 I can allways just upgrade the Graphics card to the Radion 7000 PCI for Mac, and that is QT compatable. But in your case, there is no option but to put up with it i'm afraid.
