I have just bought an eMac with the new Apple optical mouse. Has anyone experienced any problems with it suddenly jumping around the screen.
With regard to the other respondent who reported losing two Apple mice but finding success with a Kensington optical mouse, I can report that I have had the same experience, but that I think this is an entirely different problem than the one originally reported by the first messager. The Apple optical mouse will generate erratic cursor behaviour on certain surfaces. Frankly, I don't use a mouse pad of any sort any more because the mouse works just fine right on my desktop surface.
However, I have a problem in my computer room of excessive static electricity build-up, especially in the cold winter months. I have anti-static discharge mats under every computer in the room, but unfortunately it is often the case that I forget to touch the anti-static pad before reaching for the mouse. I can easily generate a half inch arc between my hand and the mouse, just by rolling my chair a few feet and then back to my normal position. Well, what I have found is that the original Apple mice will withstand between a dozen and twenty such "hits" but eventually they die completely. The symptoms of a "hit" are that the cursor either totally freezes on screen or it will move vertically but not horizontally. This goes on for a few seconds until the mouse recovers, and then everything works well again. Until the next hit.
I have destroyed three or four Apple mice in this manner, over a year. However, the Kensington mice produce the same symtpoms of a full or partially frozen cursor for a few seconds, but I have yet to actually destroy a Kensington mouse. The ones I use have a USB extension cord which retracts completely into the mouse case for easy travel or storage in a laptop bag.
