It might be worth it to check that it really is dead.  I gather that you are in 
NYC and there are any number of places not to trust besides Apple Support.  
I have a lovely iMac that Apple diagnosed as needing a new mother board 
after a few phone sessions.  The 80 yr old woman who owned it gave up 
and bought a Windows box.  Turned out it needed a new PRAM battery!

Have you checked the symple things?  Just thought it worth asking.
