Don't know about computers as a group. But old Macs are kind of like the old Timex ads. They just keep on running. Our iMac slot loaders were Summer 2000 G3 350's (the el cheapo models). Other than replacing the CD players and adding larger HD's they just keep on running. Video screens are still very crisp and bright. We maxed out the memory and both run 10.3.3. Not near as fast as our new Macs, but still fully functional and providing useful service.
My old PTP 200 ( albeit upgraded) is pushing 8 years of age and still is going strong, now as a server. Look at the list activity on some of the other LEM list for the real early Macs and there area lot of old timers still going.
