Any old IDE CD ROM drive should work, however, they may or may not enable 
the Mac to boot from the CD, and they certainly won't fit in the iMac's 
case. But in theory, you could get a nice long IDE cable and run it out 
the side of the case and connect the drive outside the iMac. Its not 
pretty, but it will work.

There are various places online that will tell you how to plug a standard 
IDE cable into the IDE connector on the slot load iMacs.
