Here is the result of the install I mentioned last week:

I bought a $599 refurbished 1GHZ emac with a CD-ROM from Apple.com and I purchased the Toshiba SD-R5112 Superdrive at http://www.techsunny.com for $68.85 with free shipping. (I have no connection to the company--it was just the cheapest place I could find...) They sent it via priority mail and I received it two days later.

I found install information here: http://www.wilko.com/emac/ but the 1Ghz eMac install procedure is MUCH EASIER than these directions imply. In fact, I think these directions must have been for an older eMac model, because there were several steps that I didn't need to perform (like remove the speakers). You take off the case then remove a metal shield and you have easy access to the drive. It took me about 15 minutes.

I noticed that the eject actually works BETTER now than it did with the Apple installed CD-ROM which had a slightly narrower tray that clunked when it opened. The DVD tray opens the front drive cover much more smoothly than the original CD-ROM tray did.

This drive was recognized as a native superdrive immediately by system 10.3.3. I didn't want to be bothered with software mods for the life of the machine, so this was important to me.

As soon as It was together, I inserted the iLife 4.0 DVD that came with the eMac and installed everything including including iDVD. (Why they included the install DVD with a CD-ROM equipped machine, I don't know.) iDVD ran perfectly. I haven't actually burned a disk yet, but the drive is recognized as native Superdrive, so I don't think it will be an issue.

I also put in a DVD movie and it automatically started the DVD player and began playing it.

And yes, the drive IS BOOTABLE! I booted the Apple Hardware test CD that came with the eMac with no problems. My drive came preset to "master".
