Don't know about the striations, but in Panther when you go into System
Settigns and change the Energy management, I thought Panther gave you
the option to enable or disable screen shut down and hard drive going to
sleep. I don't know if you've already tried this. I wonder if the iMac
might be overheating being left on for so long. I really don't know
enough about flat displays to know if this is true.

Subject: Striations

My PowerPC G4 (2.1) iMac - the upside-down pudding basin
and flat screen on an articulated arm - has developed a
problem since I installed OS-X 3, Panther - new installation
from OS Disks, not up-grade.

With Panther I continued my OS-9 practice of leaving the iMac
connected to my Broadband supplier, more or less, all the
time. With OS-9 the system worked OK.

With OS-X the system "Sleeps" after some time and "Wakes
up" on pressing the mouse button - EXCEPT - when I go to
bed and come back some hours later. Then I find that the
screen display has "broken up" into vertical striations.

In the top third of the screen the icons can be seen although
they are distorted by the overlay. In the bottom two-thirds the
striations completely blot out the screen and the lower icons.
The Dock, normally set to "Hide" does not reappear and,
although I can move it to left or right only the first three/four
icons - Finder, Safari, Mail can be seen so I cannot work out if I
am still connected to my ISP.

"System Preferences" comes up but I can only see the top
third and attempts to get at the Startup Disk to test the machine
by restarting is impossible - it is in the obliterated area.

My only (?) resort is to "kill" and restart the machine with the
On-Off button - not a procedure that I am happy with.

Any suggestions?
