Software updates

Since I (and others) have had problems with software updates 
sometimes not working right when installed using an administrator 
profile, I was wondering if we should log into root to do the 
installs. I'm mainly thinking of System software, but possibly other 
application software also. I remember when I installed Jaguar and it 
broke an application. The only way to get the application to work 
with Jaguar was to log in as root and then reinstall the application 
software. Apple later fixed the bug in Jaguar that killed the 
application.
