I have been thinking about upgrading my daughter's Rev1 iMac in the way of ram and a new hard drive. Is it possible to replace the hard drive or will I be stuck with just 4gb?
You have two options here:
1. Take apart the machine and replace the drive with any size up to 128GB. I would specifically recommend a drive with a speed of 7200 and an 8MB cache.
2. Spend a little money and get a HARMONi upgrade from Sonnet. This will not only replace the processor with something a great deal faster (500 or 600 MHz), but will add a Firewire port. This would allow you to add external FW drives (IDE drives in FW cases) for almost limitless expansion. Really gives those machines a new lease on life!
