Consumer quality routers are under $20 delivered on epay. Get one that has a serial port. Set it to do DHCP and hook an external modem to it. You'll be out about $40 and save yourself a ton of aggravation. I do exactly this using a d-link DI-704 and a $10 from the Salvation Army Zoom modem. Allows me to have as many systems on-line as I want.

Much easier than trying to use the internal modem (Which isn't the world's greatest packet passer anyway...)

Hi list:

My granddaughter has 2 iMacs, 333 MHz and a 350 MHz running Jaguar and
Panther respectively. I would like to use a 4 port D-Link wired
ethernet router so they can both share the dialup connection using the
internal modem. What's making it hard for me to figure out is the
internal modem's place in the "chain". I've set this kind of thing up
with a cable modem which is an easy path to understand. Is it at all
possible to do this with dialup or do I need a different type of
router- or a converter of some type? Thanks for your help in advance.

You can't share a single dialup connection using two modems. The way
you share a modem-based dialup connection is to have one machine
(Machine A) connected to the internet via dialup and also connected to
the other iMac (Machine B) via ethernet. Then Machine A must be
configured to "share" the internet connection (via a proxy, for example)
and Machine B then points to Machine A [over the ethernet connection]
to get onto the internet...

"Internet" --->>DIALUP--->> "Machine A" -->> [Proxy] -->>ETHERNET>>--
"Machine B"

Not sure what facilities are available on OS X to set up a proxy, but I'm
sure it can be done.
