The bright spot (if you want to call it that) is that a lot of this music will be remastered again in SACD or DVD Audio format, offering you yet another opportunity to "upgrade" and repurchase the music you enjoy.
Another thing to consider is encoding the CDs in a digital form (preferably open, lossless format) and thus extending their longevity -- in theory indefinitely, if you switch the media from time to time (i.e. if you backup on DVDs, remember about their lifespan). This was never so easy before; preserving the music from tapes, vinyls, 8" tracks was much more difficult and usually introduced degradation.
