The simple analogy that I've found helps people understand music is relate it to books. Its basically the same rules. You can buy a book, and you can read it as many times as you want. You can loan it to friends, you can give it away, you can sell it. But you aren't likely to duplicate a whole book just so you can pass on a copy to someone else. You aren't allowed to anyway, but since people just don't do that, it makes it easier for them to think about what is and is not allowed with music. Also, when a book wears out and falls apart, you don't expect the publisher to give you another copy. If you buy a hard bound copy of a book, and later a paperback version comes out, you don't expect the publisher to give you a copy of it. If you can (and would) do it with a book, chances are you can do it with music. If you can't or wouldn't do it with a book, then chances are you also can't do it with music.
