Beem there, done that. No answers. Neither on Apple.com. I am getting a
-9972 Error code with "The underlying task reported failure on exit" when
trying to use First Aid on direct boot from the CD.

eMac 1ghz, 256Meg

Does it have any hardware upgrades? Any of these just recent?

No. I was using 9.2 for ViaVoice, which I do not have for OS X.

There are many. No I did not. (OK, I just left and tried again, same
response....)

Was there a lightning strike nearby about the

Not that I know of. Here in So. Cal there are not too many line surges of
that quality. Besides, I have a surge protector in the power line.

No

 Command-Option-Escape

Tried that, it didn't respond (the only thing moving at power down was the
mouse which was an hourglass (for over an hour)

Last resort.

No, but I will try that.

Did you try resetting the PRAM -- while pressing the Command,

I'll try that too.

Do you get a Sad Mac icon on

No sad mac. Just a smile mac and a question mark mac.

Nope.

Tech Tool freezes on the hard disk directory search. All other checks work.
Apple hardware test is checking OK, but I think it is skipping the hard drive.

No it does not.

If you are caught in this situation, I cannot

I am fortunate to have an Apple store in Pasadena. They said that the error
code is probably a bad disk block in the boot area. They suggested Disk
Warrior to build back the directory. Have you used this before?

I tried that. All their suggestions were not possible or not the solution.
I can live without OS 9, but I really need the files on my OS X partition.
Many are backed up, but some are not. I hope that someone can give me a
suggestion at this point. Disk Warrior seems to be my direction at this time.

If anyone has used it before, is there a special version for OS X or does
any version work?

Thanks to all in advance, and PLEASE help me, I need to get off this stupid
PC that I am using!
