There is a long history of discussing benchmark programs on the Apple SciTech List. <http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/scitech>
I would suggest you put the question there. Benchmarks can be very illusionary and favor the specific characteristics of a certain processor type, so you definitely need to see how your real world computation does it. What do you need MIPS for anyway? Both the G4 and the especially the G5 can give you plenty, but it certainly depends on the code being optimized for. Have a look here: <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/Performance Fundamentals/index.html> And here: <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/CodeSpeed/i ndex.html> Besides, the G4 is an outdated processor by now, so if you need performance, go for a G5. (I know, I know, they are still useful, as I just got a G4 1.25 GHz PB this spring and it is brilliant. It totally outruns my 2.8 GHz P4 at work at real life stuff. It may not however, when doing a benchmark that does not take advantage of Altivec.) If you happen to write your own code the SciTech list is totally awesome as the engineers from Apple will guide you to stellar results. Have a look at http://www.apple.com/acg/ too.
