Thanks for the pram hint. Pressed the keys and got things going again. 
However, the cd-rom is not being recognized. I pulled it apart and 
checked all the connections. Everything in place. I put in a cd, listen 
closely, it starts up and then winds down. No icon ever appears on the 
desktop.
