Another suggestion if you go to your monitor control panel in control strip if you have it and check that the settings are not putting the botton of the desktop down below the bottom of the screen, oops if the screen is like that the control strip would be below too. You may have to go to apple menu then select control panels and scroll down to monitors select it.You should see panel "geometry" select it and adjust the hegfht and width appropriately.

When I tried Sherlock, I found 27 entries under "trash". If you have an older OS, I think you use finder to locate stuff. Give it a try.
