No. The Airport Extreme Base Station is indeed a router.
The reason it's more expensive than the Asante is because the Airport Extreme Base station has more features:
1. It carries/handles Appletalk correctly. 2. It includes a USB port for USB printer sharing. 3. It guarantees compatibility with AOL and Macs (not many routers do). 4. It includes a dial-up modem in it as well. 5. Includes a spot for an external antenna if needed.
Now if none of that is important to you, go cheaper.
That's nothing to do with the Airport. Since they are using Windows boxes, spying on their activities (at least after the fact) should be child's play. As a person who does not have kids and certainly not teens, I'm not the best person to offer advice, but I will anyway: make it clear to them that if you ever even THINK they are violating your trust, the computers and video-game systems are gone. Reserve the right (a signed agreement if necessary) to inspect their machines at ANY TIME -- and periodically do so, so that they know you're not kidding.2. How do I maintain some sort of parental control over what the teenagers are doing on the net?
That won't stop them from exploring sites they shouldn't, but it might stop them from doing it at your house.
