I'm now playing DVDs in my 1999-era Rev. D iMac --
I got this slot-loader from MCE -- http://mcetech.com/imacrw.html -- easily installed it, got the drivers from the site, and was burning CDs straight from iTunes in minutes!
Unfortunately, I had trashed DVD Player some time ago because I never thought I'd use it. I had a heckuva time trying to find the DVD Player I needed off the Apple site. Finally, I just did an OS X reinstall. The DVD Player was back, but now I was getting the [-70013] error message. No matter what I tweaked, I could never get it to work.
I e-mailed MCE for support (and posted a query here!), but before anyone could get back to me I stumbled across VLC on versiontracker: http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738
I couldn't be happier with this software. I popped a DVD in, and it played fine in VLC. Well, it skipped a little, but for a 5-year old 333 that's not bad.
Anyway, I never thought I'd be watching a DVD in my iMac -- and probably won't use it much for that anyway, but it's a nice feature upgrade!
