By now, your ISP's tech support has probably isolated the problem, but if not...

Start troubleshooting by power cycling everything. Shut down the computer, the router and the modem. Wait five minutes and repower the modem. Wait one minute and repower the router. When the lights on the router assume their usual illumination, restart the computer.

Try to bring up a webpage. Doesn't work? Then enter the IP address for your router and check the configuration. Ensure that it's set to the proper protocol for your ISP (DHCP, PPPoE) and verify that if PPPoE, the user name and password are correct. Verify that NAT is enabled if that's what you're using. Save changes and reboot the router. (When you do get on-line, check for firmware updates for the router...)

If that fails, remove the router from the mix and set up your Mac's TCP/IP to communicate directly with the modem. If you can then get on-line, you've found the problem. Replace the router.

I am writing this from work and my home ADSL connection is
seemingly down, but it all started in a strange way.

First I couldn't connect using my D-link DI 704-P router, only
if I connected directly to the ADSL modem, but now I cannot
connect using either.

Just strange that it should go in steps.

The modem shows the two LEDs it should, so I doubt it's my
ISP (though I am currently holding in a queue to check), and
when I get home I will check using my work PowerBook and a
different cable.

Anyone have any similar experience or suggestion ???
