Are you sayin' we got bad breath? :)
That's EXACTLY what I did with my G3/700 for EXACTLY the same reason. Worked out GREAT!!The loudest Mac in the house is my daughters stock 500 MHz DV SE iMac.
The single 30-gig HD in it makes a high pitched whine that can be heard from the next room.
I have picked up a new quiet 7200 RPM Western Digital 120 Gig HD /8 MB Cache to put into it.
Step 1. Install new HD into FW external case. How can I move her files from the 30 gig (two 15 gig partitions, OSX 10.2.8 & OS9.1) onto the new HD (two 60 gig partitions) without having to re-install the operating systems ?
Step 2. Attach to iMac and fire it up.
Step 3. Partition the drive as desired, or if you've already done that, skip to Step 4.
Step 4. Use Carbon Copy Cloner (shareware, from http://www.bombich.com) to clone Partition A of the old drive onto Partition A of the new drive.
Step 5. Repeat for Partition B.
Step 6. Power down, disassemble iMac to remove old hard drive, swap with the new drive, put old drive in FW case, put new drive in iMac.
That's it, you're done. I'd suggest you erase the "old" drive (once you verify that everything's working as it should on the new one) into one 30GB partition, then use that as a backup for your user folder (which probably won't reach 30GB in size for a long time unless you let the kid go wild with the music and the videos).
Eventually you'll want to put another 120GB drive into that external FW case so that you can clone the whole "new" drive entirely. That's what I did and now I have a full, complete, bootable backup I can take with me and plug into ANY modern Mac and just start working again.
