Is this absolutely true? Things which are being made available under
the Creative Commons or music that is being shared as a collaborative
process are not found via LimeWire, perhaps?

Well no, I wasn't counting those. I thought it was clear that I was referring to the commercial music downloading sites that work with the big 5 record companies and others, but perhaps that wasn't obvious.


Of course, the Mac can download and play music in a huge variety of formats, almost everything a PC can download and play (with the exception of music encoded in WMA's protected format). Even "oddball" formats like Ogg Vorbis and FLAC are no challenge for the Mac platform, though iTunes tends to stick to only the established compressed formats like MP3 and MP4 (AAC) formats (and to a limited extent WMA), along with uncompressed formats like WAV, AIFF, and Apple Lossless Codec.
