Sounds like it might be a good time to zap PRAM at restart: try to go here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
if not: restart with these four keys depressed simultaneously: Option + Apple + P + R keep them held down for three chimes and only then, let go :] This process often clears up stuff and of course, reset desktop at the next restart.
