Regarding running Yellow Dog Linux on a iMac, I have a iMac 333-mhz with 316-mb ram, and it runs KDE and Gnome just fine. There is however, XFCE available for Yellow Dog, which is less of a memory hog than the others.

I have been using linux since 1997 [on the pc platform], so it was a natural choice for me to run Yellow Dog instead of OS X. Having said that, when I get a G5 [haven't decided on which] I will be running OS X and the latest version of Yellow Dog.

As you probably already know, Apple has an alternative to Linux, called Darwin [BSD derivative], that is part of OS X.
