I prefer using ctrl-cmd-shift-4 + space afterwards. That way I get to choose
the window I want a screenshot of, and the result is in the clipboard and
can be pasted whereever I want it.

Also look at System Preferences, Keyboard & mouse, Keyboard shortcuts.
